Who Else Has a God So Near?

What does your life say about your family? What does your life say about you? And what does your life say about your God?

“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes…I am teaching you…in order that you may go in and take possession of the land which the Lord…is giving you.”
Deuteronomy 4:1

Listen and obey.

That’s what children ought to do, right? And that’s what children naturally do, right?

Wrong.

Our hearts question, Why?! Some cultures seem to teach their children to ask why. Other cultures seem to teach their children to never question. Just listen and obey. But the new generation is filled with doubts and desire for truth and longing for comfort and a relativism that seeks what most satisfies self.

Is it bad to ask why? No. It doesn’t have to be. God understood the human heart and so He filled His words to His people with explanations for all that their hearts might question.

In Deuteronomy 4, we see some of the answers to why we ought to obey Him.

He says, “For that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of all peoples who will hear these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'” Deuteronomy 4:6 explains that when we follow God, there will be a wisdom on our lives that will be attractive to the rest of the world.

“For what great nation is there that has a God so near to it as the Lord our God when we call on Him?” Deuteronomy 4:7

The world will see that we have a God who is near. That He hears us when we call on His name. That He is not distant and uncaring. He is not waiting for us to mess up so He can punish us. HE IS NEAR.
